Funds are being allocated for a further 5,000 recruits to the National Rural Youth Services Corps, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says

He said this was part of a total R19 billion to be spent on rural development and agriculture in the coming year.

The department of rural development announced the corps’ programme last year, saying it was expected to create 10,000 jobs for unemployed rural youth.

Earlier this month, government announced that “over 7,000” young people had already been recruited for the corps.

  • National Treasury said in the Budget Review, tabled along with Gordhan’s speech, that the R19 billion included R400 million added over the medium term to the programme to support land reform beneficiaries and other emerging farmers.

An additional R100 million was provided to the land care programme grant, bringing to R293 million the three-year allocation  for 2874km of fencing to protect ecologically sensitive areas from livestock.
