Teachers go back to class

Mathematics and science teachers from schools that achieved less than a 60 percent pass rate last year in KwaZulu-Natal will go for training and skills development courses

This resolution was taken at the three-day education summit held at the International Convention Centre in Durban last week.

The summit was aimed at finding ways to address educational challenges and means to deliver quality education to improve results.

One of the summit's declarations was that at the beginning of each school term all teachers in schools that performed below 60percent in mathematics and physical science would be subjected to a rigorous programme of professional development - both in content and pedagogy - for four consecutive weekends.

But the National Teachers Union said it would not allow its teachers to go for training sessions at weekends if they were not remunerated.

Education MEC Senzo Mchunu said the training would begin as early as this weekend.
