Teachers probed for pregnancies

THE South African Council of Educators is investigating whether teachers were responsible for impregnating some of the 57 pupils at a Limpopo high school.

A 13-year-old girl is among the pregnant pupils.

The allegations come barely a week after SACE announced that 81 teachers had been dismissed last year for sexual offences.

SACE spokesperson Themba Ndhlovu said it could not rule out the possibility that teachers were responsible. He said they were going to act to root out the "rotten potatoes" who are denting the image of the teaching profession.

Ndhlovu said between February 14 and 18, SACE would speak to parents and teachers in Limpopo about the code of ethics, which would focus more on affairs between teachers and pupils.

The SACE says it is working round the clock to establish whether teachers were involved.

Some parents are firm that teachers at Mavalani Secondary School outside Giyani are responsible for the pregnancies at the school.

"We may not know at the moment who is responsible for these pregnancies but some of the teachers have been dating the pupils," one of the parents who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

"We know these teachers. We can also point them out but we are afraid our children could be victimised."

The school had a total of 50 pregnancies last year and by January 15, 29 pregnancies were recorded and the number increased to 57 this week.

A visit to the school by Sowetan on Monday revealed scores of pregnant girls at the gate, who sat with their parents who had come to take care of them. Some parents had brought equipment to help with childbirth should the need arise.

School principal Meserea Mahungu said it was important for parents to break the silence and confront school authorities if teachers dated their children.

"As far as I am concerned, those responsible for the pregnancies are fellow pupils," she said, citing an example.
