Music therapy a boon for kids

LOCAL hip-hop stars, a music therapist and non-profit organisation Save the Children have teamed up to help build self-confidence in vulnerable children.

They have been working with orphans living in a shelter in Soshanguve, Pretoria, in a project called Peace of Mind through Music.

Professional musicians Wax (Nde Ndifonka) and Tshepo Machitele worked with music therapist Karen de Kock and the 25 children for six weeks.

Machitele grew up in an orphanage.

Their music therapy helped "neutralise" bullying in the shelter, De Kock said.

The orphans told Sowetan that the music therapy helped them become more confident.

"I feel positive and energised, and music really helps me to be creative and confident," said a 17-year boy.

Wax, the founder of Lolhiphop Records, said one 6-year-old boy was in pain from an eye infection but refused to stay away from sessions.

Rodney Knotts of Save the Children said the change in behaviour during the project showed that "music can contribute significantly to the physical and emotional wellbeing of children, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances".

Explained Wax: "Music therapy is used successfully in many parts of the world to help personal development, and in the mental and physical healing of patients."
