eThekwini spurns Shilowa

THE Congress of the People in the eThekwini region has called on its members to repudiate attempts by Mbhazima Shilowa to hijack the party. The party also says it will contest all the wards in eThekwini

The call was made during the regions launch of its election campaign on Saturday. The party also pledged their support for Mosiuoa Lekota.

The party's deputy regional secretary, Mzwandile Gumenke, said they also rejected "with contempt" statements made last week by the former provincial secretary, Phillip Mhlongo, that the party in KwaZulu-Natal supported Shilowa as president.

"This is one individual talking, who has his own agenda. Mhlongo does not represent Cope. He was removed as provincial secretary by popular vote, and the province is now under curatorship.

"We reject his hate speech, his racism and his support for Shilowa," said Gumenke.

About 40 branches from the region were represented at the meeting. They resolved to contest all the 103 wards in eThekwini. "As the region, we reject the leadership that was undemocratically imposed on us by Mhlongo last year, and we will hold our own elective conference within a few weeks," he said.

The theme for the election campaign will be "speeding up service delivery with the community", and reflects the manifesto of Cope that communities will have more say in local government.
