MORE THAN 21 000 fines have been issued to traffic offenders and more than 8 000 vehicles taken off the road since the start of the festive season.

From November 28 to December 4, 220 motorists were arrested across the country, including 150 for drunk driving, 13 for speeding, 13 for reckless and negligent driving, three for overloading, 27 for public transport permits, eight for not being in possession of a valid driver's licence, four for false documents and 13 for other offences.

During the same period, 128762 vehicles and drivers were checked.

Despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies, drivers and fleet owners reportedly continue to defy the authorities and law. This weekend an overloaded minibus killed about 30 people after colliding head-on with a truck on the N3 outside Harrismith in the Free State.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said: "As part of the festive season road safety plan compulsory stops have been implemented along major arterial routes for public transport vehicle and driver checks.

"If it is suspected that the drivers of buses, taxis and trucks are fatigued. Such drivers will not be allowed to continue on their journey. They must stop and rest for a few hours before being allowed to continue.

"Before embarking on a trip, test yourself, test your vehicle and act responsibly on the roads.

"Road safety is everybody's responsibility," he said.

Ndebele said: "We want to convey condolences to the families of those killed in this gruesome road crash outside Harrismith."

Road traffic offences must be reported to 0861 400 800.
