ORTambo remembered

OR TAMBO, the respected late leader of the ANC, will be honoured by top South African musicians and others from all over Africa.

The musicians will perform on December 17 at the Union Buildings to pay tribute to the legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo.

Leading the pack of high profile musicians billed to perform on this historical day will be Mzansi's new singing sensation, Zahara.

After her triumphant victory at the recent Metro FM awards, which saw her walk home with two trophies, including the song of the year, Zahara will share the stage with musicians who only a year ago she could only have dreamt of performing alongside.

Part of the line-up include couple Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya, iconic jazz singer Jonas Gwangwa, multi award-winning Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi and his band, Black Spirits, South African Music Award-winning guitarist and songwriter Selaelo Selota and Zakes Bantwini among others.

The festival seeks to instil a sense of unity and to embrace diversity in South Africa.

Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba, who is renowned for his firm standing against xenophobia, actively advocated for the inclusion of all Africans in this event.

Gigaba said the concert would be used to educate locals about the outstanding role that Tambo played in the liberation movement and to promote tolerance among all South African s.

Reiterating the famous words of the late struggle hero, Gagaba said: "We have a vision of South Africa in which we shall all live and work together as equals in conditions of peace and prosperity".

Expected to attract music lovers from all walks of life, the organisers said the concert - befittingly dubbed SA Pays Tribute to OR Tambo - goes beyond remembering the achievement of an individual.

In recognition of Tambo's leadership, Nelson Mandela once said: "In paying tribute to our comrade president, we are addressing not only the unrivalled qualities and achievements of the individual, Oliver Tambo. We are addressing also the man as the crystallisation and personification of what the ANC is and became under his leadership."

Some of the not-to-be missed festivities include an exciting line-up of some of the country's best DJs and a kiddies' village to keep them busy while the adults enjoy the good music. Gates open at 10am and admission is free.
