'He mentored pupils who were to become big names'

SY MOGOTSI, one of Soweto's best known and most popular schoolteachers and principals, has died after a long illness.

Mogotsi, 74, of Diepkloof Extension, died at a Johannesburg hospital last Wednesday after a long battle with diabetes.

Described by former colleagues as a versatile teacher who had served the Soweto community diligently for close to 40 years, Mogotsi had retired from teaching in 1998.

He had taught at some of Soweto's top schools such as Sekano-Ntoane High School, where he taught for 17 years, and Makgome High School, where he was principal for 16 years.

He was also involved in adult education and school sports development and had mentored pupils who were later to become big names in sport. They included top footballers such as Blessing "Killer" Mngidi, George "Best" More and Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.

Mogotsi will be buried on Saturday.
