A senior prosecutor and two others charged with taking an estimated R5 million in bribes were today granted R2,000 bail each by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court
Their trial was set for January 27.
Silanda Phiros, 49, is accused of taking bribes to cancel summonses served on speeding motorists.
His lawyer Jannie Kruger contended that Phiros should be granted bail because he had no previous convictions.
Phiros appeared alongside Vincent Maake, 26, and Modiba Pheeho-Mcleod, 43.
Maake is accused of soliciting clients at the court on behalf of Phiros.
Pheeho-Mcleod, a security guard at the court, allegedly monitored surveillance cameras for Phiros.
The men allegedly charged motorists R2,000 to cancel their traffic summonses.
This apparently went on for about two years, during which the three were thought to have accumulated an estimated R5 million.
