Hotel staff march over wages

CROWNE Plaza Rosebank Hotel staff will embark on a march tomorrow demanding a wage increase.

Industrial, commercial and allied workers union official Peter Mngomezulu said: "The employees have been working under very difficult conditions.

"We are asking for a 6,5% increase, but they are telling us that they can't give us as they owe R3million in rent. They are claiming all these things yet they do not want to show us their audited financial reports."

The union is also demanding overtime pay for the workers.

Mngomezulu also revealed that a security guard at the hotel made life unbearable for black employees.

"They have laid complaints about him to no avail. A worker once told how the man told him to steal a radio belonging to another security guard and promised to give him R500 for that. This person clearly has an agenda ... and that is to see these people lose their jobs."

Daryl Erasmus, director for sales and marketing at Crowne Plaza, said they have measures in place in the event of the strike taking place tomorrow.
