Party suspends two over Godi statement

The African People’s Convention has suspended two of its central  executive committee members for issuing a statement accusing its president Themba Godi of sowing division within the party.

“The [APC]... found these allegations to be nothing but a political stunt from some few power hungry anarchists with leadership ambitions,” the party’s national spokesman Patrick Sindane said in a statement on Wednesday.

On Monday central executive committee (CEC) member Mfemane Maringa said in a press release that Godi and four other party members had been suspended because of how the party was being run and administered. He accused the group of illegally dismissing the party’s councillors in some provinces and replacing them with family members or friends.

Responding to this, Sindane said: “Themba Godi remains the credible leader of the APC and no group of some disgruntled members  can therefore suspend him outside the party structures”.

Maringa and another CEC member, Elly Mokoena were suspended with immediate effect.

The two had organised a central executive meeting in Germiston on Saturday, where they said APC members had decided that Godi, a Member of Parliament and chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, would be suspended.

Sindane said Maringa was not part of the APC’s national leadership and had no authority to suspend anyone from the party.

Maringa and Mokoena were expected to appear before the CEC on November 5.

“It is without any doubt that the two have brought the party into disrepute and will be equally charged [with] sowing divisions within the party,” Sindane said.
