'I killed Eugene Terre'Blanche' - Youth

A VENTERSDORP police station data typist got the shock of his life when a young man on the other side of the phone told him he had killed AWB leader Eugene Terre'Blanche, the Ventersdorp high court heard yesterday.

The teenager wanted the police to come and arrest him before the farmers from the area found him.

Maqathule Nkathule told the court that on April 3 last year at about 6pm the minor, who is on trial for the AWB leader's death, called the station and told him that he and his friend Chris Mahlangu had killed Terre'Blanche.

"He was scared. He told me they were hiding in a compound near the deceased's farm because they were afraid that other farmers would kill them," Nkathule said.

Mahlangu, 28, and the minor were charged with murder, housebreaking, attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and crimen injuria.

Both accused had pleaded not guilty.

A postmortem report revealed that Terre'Blanche suffered 28 injuries.

The teenager, who left school to become a herdsman for Terre'Blanche's cattle, was 15 years old at the time of the murder.

The minor's lawyer, Norman Arendse, argued that his client was abused verbally, physically and sexually and was also exploited.

He said the living conditions on the farm were not conducive for human habitation.

Prosecutor George Baloyi wanted the court to accept bail proceedings as evidence showed that certain statements were made by Mahlangu.

But his lawyer, Khomotso Tlouane, objected, saying Mahlangu did not have sufficient information to make an informed decision. The trial continues.
