Convicted killer prays report will save him

THE Johannesburg high court will await a social worker's report before sentencing a man convicted of killing a police officer last year.

Andile David Langa will be hoping that the report will save him from serving a lengthy prison sentence for the July murder of policeman Constable Mavhayisi Mhlongo at the George Goch men's hostel just outside Johannesburg.

The report was requested by the defence, which contends that Langa was underage when he committed the crime.

Langa also wounded Mhlongo's partner, Takalani Nemaitoni, and murdered another man, Pius Madlala, who was visiting a relative at the hostel that fateful evening.

Langa was also found guilty by Johannesburg high court Acting Judge Betty Mahalele on two counts of attempted murder after opening fire on Madlala's nephew, Moffat, and his 4-year-old son.

Other charges included robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Langa's alleged accomplices, Bambaliphi Cebekhulu and Philane Mbatha, were acquitted on all charges.

During the trial Sergeant Thabo Gama of the Jeppe crime prevention unit testified that Langa confessed to his involvement in the July 30 shooting.

The report is expected to be read out to the court next month.
