R434000 dagga haul: couple held

A COUPLE from Boroa township near Tweespruit in Free State were arrested yesterday for allegedly being in possession of dagga with a street value of R434000.

According to police spokesman Sergeant Martin Xuma the couple, aged 39 and 34, were arrested after police received information about a couple in possession of dagga at Boroa, just outside Thaba Nchu in Free State.

"The police rushed to the provided address and found a 39-year-old African male with an African female, 34, in possession of dagga weighing 4.34kg.

"They were arrested on the spot," said Xuma.

He said the couple, who are expected to appear in the Excelsior Magistrate's Court on Monday, are believed to have been travelling from Lesotho to Bloemfontein when they were arrested.

The N8 road between Bloemfontein and the Lesotho border is notorious for being used by dagga dealers, and a number of arrests normally take place on this route.

Captain Makgaola Motang, the acting commander of the Ladybrand police cluster, expressed his appreciation to the community for working with the police in fighting crime.
