Giant cellphone company's drive to connect people

THE previously unconnected community of Mokutung village near Burgersfort, Limpopo, will now have access to the Internet, thanks to a donation of four WebBoxes by a leading cellphone company.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the weekend, Vodacom's executive manager in Limpopo, Joe Dlamini, said he believed the donation would improve the lives of the villagers.

"The power of the Internet is invaluable and connectivity has the potential to transform education and accelerate economic and job growth in this country.

"We are proud to be donating these devices to Mokutung village. It will ensure better education and access to information for learners and the community as a whole," Dlamini said.

He said the WebBox was aimed at getting more South Africans connected to the Internet.

The device resembles a keyboard that can be plugged into a television set, which can then be used as a computer to have access to the Internet, play computer games, send e-mails and SMSes and listen to the radio.

The distribution of WebBox is Vodacom's commitment to ensuring that more people in the country are able to leverage information, Dlamini said .

Two WebBoxes were donated to Kgaola Secondary School and one to Mokutung Primary School. Another WebBox was given to the tribal office of Mokutung.
