Escapee kills himself in cop shootout

A LIMPOPO man accused of terrorising the community of Sekhukhune for more than five years has allegedly killed himself after a fierce exchange of gunfire with the police.

The shooting and alleged suicide occurred in Orighstad, outside Burgersfort, on Wednesday.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi identified the dead man as Simangele Jabulane Thulare of Mapareng village.

He was facing 14 house robbery charges and was also wanted for escaping from prison two years ago.

Brig Mulaudzi said seven of Thulare's dockets were already in court for his appearance when he and three other inmates escaped.

"The three are Blazing Mohlala, Themba Mokwana and Milton Selekana," Mulaudzi said.

The police were tipped off by members of the public about his whereabouts.

"Our officers surrounded the RDP house in which Thulare was hiding and asked him to come out," Mulaudzi explained.

He said Thulare started shooting at the police and later shot himself in the head. Thulare was taken to the Matibidi Hospital where he died.

The three other suspects are still at large.
