ANC councillor in court

A CASE of assault against a Pretoria municipal councillor and nine other people was postponed in the Moretele magistrate's court yesterday, Gauteng police said.

George Matjila, 37, and his fellow ANC members were released on a warning, Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.

The case was postponed to September 30 for further investigation.

Matjila was arrested on Sunday and charged with assault. He is a member of the mayoral committee for roads and transport in the City of Tshwane. The incident took place during a meeting held on Saturday in Hammanskraal, Pretoria.

According to media reports, Matjila organised a ward meeting without informing all ANC members on the local ward council. The meeting was aimed at electing new leaders for ward 95.

A fight broke out when the uninvited members arrived and disrupted proceedings.

Several members of the ruling party were allegedly assaulted by Matjila and his supporters.
