Wounded cop survives as gun jams

A policeman who survived an ambush at George Goch hostel, east of Johannesburg, has described how a man pressed a gun to the back of his head and tried several times to fire while he lay bleeding on the ground.

A policeman who survived an ambush at George Goch hostel, east of "He had already fired a bullet that exited through my mouth. He placed the gun at the back of my head and pulled the trigger three times. I could feel the cold barrel of the gun and heard the click-click of the trigger but nothing happened."

This was Constable Takalani Nemaitoni's chilling testimony yesterday in the Johannesburg high court where three men are on trial for the murder of Warrant Officer Mavhayisi Mhlongo and a civilian, Pius Thembinkosi Madlala.

Nemaitoni and Mhlongo had responded to a call that there was a suspicious looking vehicle parked at the hostel. Nemaitoni said when they arrived at the hostel after 7pm on July 30 last year, they established that the car had been hijacked.

"While we were sitting in the car waiting for a tow-truck, I noticed a man approaching us. I was sitting in the driver's seat and thought he was coming to assist us, but realised he was pointing a firearm in my direction," Nemaitoni said.

"I dived to the passenger seat and landed on Mhlongo's knees. It was then that I realised that I had been shot in the mouth. I heard the passenger door opening and it was accused number two. The inside light of the vehicle went on and I saw accused one (Andile David Langa). Langa disarmed Mhlongo and accused number two disarmed me," he said.

He said the two men handed the firearms to a third person he did not see.

"I heard one of them asking if he should kill me. I didn't hear the response, but felt the barrel of the firearm against my head."

The state alleges that the suspects killed Mhlongo and Pius Thembinkosi Madlala, and attempted to kill Nemaitoni, Moffat Madlala and Njabulo Shongwe. Langa and two other men are accused of two counts of murder, three of attempted murder, robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The trial continues.
