A-G to probe Lotto donation to Cosatu

AUDITOR-GENERAL Terence Nombembe is to investigate the National Lottery's R1 million donation to Cosatu for the federation's 25th birthday celebrations at Johannesburg Stadium in December last year.

The money was used to pay for the venue, performing artists and the stage and sound system.

However, there is no rule preventing Lotto from making donations to Cosatu, or against the R40 million it gave to the National Youth Development Agency for the World Youth Festival because payout guidelines allow it to give such organisations money from its "miscellaneous" category.

The Lotteries Act says charities must get 45 percent of its money; arts, culture and national heritage projects 28 percent; while 22 percent is allocated to sport and recreation.

The remaining 5percent is donated to "miscellaneous" non-profit organisations.

The DA has now accused the National Lottery Board of allowing the ANC and its affiliates to use the Lotto as a "party-political slush fund".
