Joburgers can now decide city's future

JOHANNESBURG mayor Parks Tau and his mayoral committee members will spend an hour every day on social networks to interact with residents on their vision, suggestions and complaints for the future of the city.

Accompanied by city manager Mavela Dlamini and Trevor Fowler, Tau yesterday launched the Growth Development Strategy (GDS) outreach programme, which will culminate in the adoption of "a shared strategy" for Johannesburg 2040 on October 20.

Johannesburg is looking at suggestions on how to improve the quality of life for its current 3,8 million people, and to ensure that the six to eight million people expected to be living in the city by 2040 enjoy a truly world-class African city.

"All contributions and suggestions will be considered. No idea is stupid," said Tau.

Residents can monitor the revisions and additions to the GDS on the municipality's website.

Tau said the city would ensure that every body participate in shaping Johannesburg's future. "How do we give a voice to the voiceless and those who do not attend meetings ... we go to churches, non-governmental organisations, individuals, private sector, civic society and social networks," said Tau.

"The people of Johannesburg must agree on what they want the city to be. This programme is about creating a collective vision, not a Parks Tau vision."

The city wants to work towards zero deprivation on housing, basic services, food security, transport and health care.

Tau said residents should share ideas on how to achieve social inclusivity, scale up early childhood development, and reduce the burden of HIV-Aids, communicable diseases like TB, lifestyle diseases like diabetes and trauma from accidents and violence.
