Mining town to get R650m mall

IF developments scheduled to take place in Burgersfort, Limpopo, are anything to go by, then the town will surely become the envy of all and sundry

The mining town will have a new mall built for the people in 18 months, construction of which is expected to start this week.

Mayor of the greater Tubatse municipality, Josias Mahlake, said during the sod-turning ceremony last Friday that he believed the building of the mall would bring about positive economic spin-offs to the poverty-stricken area.

The building of the R650million mall is expected to create at least 7000 job opportunities, with between 800 and 900 temporary jobs during the construction phase.

Mahlake said he hoped the town's fortunes would change for the better.

"Local people are poised to benefit in terms of job opportunities to be created as a result of the building of the mall," Mahlake said.

He said this would go a long way in driving poverty away from the local communities.

According to Mahlake, Burgersfort would become an economic hub of the province since the town was also home to a number of mines with vast platinum resources.

"We are optimistic that the opening of the mall would help fight poverty among our poor communities.

"We will also do everything to ensure that Burgersfort becomes the tourists' destination of choice," he added.

Jaco Odendaal, chairperson of the Abacus Asset Management, the company that won the tender to develop the mall, said leading retailers had shown confidence in the development.

"Shoppers can look forward to a modern enclosed air-conditioned mall with choice of over 100 shops, boasting a well planned tenant mixture, including South African favourites and original local stores from the Burgersfort area," said Odendaal.
