2 cops and 'kingpin' arrested

The officers, who are stationed in Soweto, allegedly provided ammunition to the bombers

POLICE have arrested two officers and a man allegedly linked to ATM bombings, while in Limpopo an ATM kingpin was arrested after a shootout with police.

The police officers and the man are linked to recent ATM bombings in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila said the officers were arrested a few hours after police apprehended the man at his house on Saturday morning.

The officers, who are stationed in Soweto, allegedly provided ammunition to the bombers.

"We want to make it clear that corruption in the police will not be tolerated." Malila said. "We are shocked that our own members could be involved in criminal activity and we won't hesitate to arrest them."

Police in Limpopo said one of the three men arrested in Malamulele after a shootout with cops was a crime kingpin who was on the run from the police and was linked to a number of cases.

The 33-year-old suspect faces charges of business robbery, escape from lawful custody and murder," spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The three are expected to appear in the Malamulele magistrate's court today on various charges.

One of the suspects, identified by the police as Sfiso Sithole Shezi of Umlazi in Durban, died during the shootout.

Malila said they believed the man arrested with the police was part of the gang thought to have been responsible for the fatal shooting of police reservist Constable Busisiwe Mehlwana during an ATM bombing at a filling station in Pimville, Soweto, earlier this month.

Police have also identified the man as one of the four men captured on closed-circuit television blowing up an ATM in Vryheid, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

A distinct feature of one of the gang members is a limp. The footage shows him emerging from behind one of the fuel pumps as the men were about to pull away.

The limping man apeared as if he might have an injury to his left leg or possibly has a prosthetic leg.
