Skierlik's awareness plan

RESIDENTS of Mazista, also known as Skierlik, have been empowered to understand the implications of being owners of a multi-million human settlement development housing project

The housing consumer education was conducted by officials from the North West department of human settlements, public safety and liaison.

It precedes the official handover of the first phase of the R51,6 million Mazista-Skierlik human settlement development project by Minister of Housing Tokyo Sexwale and North West Premier Thandi Modise today.

The awareness project is a response to evidence that housing consumers are not adequately informed of their rights and responsibilities.

They do not know how to access opportunities that had been created in the housing sector, especially by the ground-breaking new housing delivery plan.

"The project will benefit, among others, former farmworkers, whose lives have been characterised by human rights violations through deprivation of decent housing, exploitation, evictions and racism," department spokesperson Lesiba said.

The delivery of low-cost housing in Mazista became a priority in 2006 after a thorough assessment of living conditions, which determined what interventions the provincial government could make.

Provincial MEC for human settlements, public safety and liaison, Desbo Mohono said the project was aimed at restoring the dignity of the previously marginalised, poor and homeless through the informal settlements eradication programme.
