No case against Public Protector

PUBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela was yesterday surprised to learn that a case number on a police memo leaked to the media, which implicated her in corruption, had nothing to do with her

The case was opened at the Pretoria Central police station on January 11 2008 by the Department of Justice. It could not be confirmed who in the department had opened the case.

On Monday Hawks spokesperson McIntoch Polela said the case number that appeared on the memo had nothing to do with the public protector.

"It is a completely different investigation about IT and not Madonsela," he said.

Asked yesterday if she was aware that the case number did not relate to her, a stunned Madonsela, said: "No, I didn't know anything. I had never been told there was any case.

"But an impression was created that there was a nexus between that case and the case that was allegedly being investigated against me."

"We need to know who circulated that document that was trying to scandalise me.

"From day one it was clear it was malicious and it was clear it was half truths and lies."

Last week Madonsela, pictured, came under the spotlight following media reports about her imminent arrest on charges of fraud.

The charges were apparently related to her company, Waweth Resources CC, and R1,8 million it was allegedly paid for work on behalf of the South African Law reform Commission - while she worked for the institution as a commissioner.

Concern was raised about the timing of the reports against Madonsela because she was expected to release her final report into the police lease deals in which Police Commissioner Bheki Cele is implicated.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj all supported Madonsela.
