Fireman's charms cost mistress R100,000

Jilted ex-wife sues her best friend - and wins

A LOCAL fireman's attractions has cost his mistress R100000 after his ex-wife turned to the courts to mend her broken heart.

The jilted ex-wife emerged victorious yesterday when her former best friend was ordered by the civil section of the East London magistrate's court to pay up for her infidelities.

Now, only time will tell if the affections of Herman Binneman, a former supervisor at the East London fire station and the man at the centre of the dispute, was worth the hefty fine.

Unable to reconcile with her ex-husband after he reportedly moved in with the woman next door, Leonie Binneman, 44, sought out a unique form of revenge.

In December 2009, Leonie slapped her ex-best friend and neighbour Selma Meintjies, 43, with the R100,000 civil suit.

She claimed Meintjies had "stolen" her husband of 23 years and fallen pregnant with his child.

She said the two, who have since moved to KwaZulu-Natal, had been "living in adultery" since November 2008.

Leonie was claiming R50,000 for the humiliation she suffered as a result of the alleged affair, and R50,000 for the loss of comfort and support of her spouse.

She maintained throughout the year-long trial that her intention was solely to set an example to other women who have suffered a similar fate.

Then, just months later, Meintjies hit back with a counter-suit, claiming R100,000 for damages, alleging Leonie had assaulted her in January 2010, by "pulling her hair".

She was looking to be compensated for the pain and suffering suffered as a result of the alleged attack.

Yesterday, however, Meintjies was dealt yet another blow when Magistrate Abel Mdalana dismissed all claims of assault with costs.
