Mayor's clever strategy

SOUTH Africa's youngest mayor, Carol Phiri of Musina, this weekend showed up at several functions with Muvhango actors to the delight of members of the public.

Phiri, 34, visited several places, including the Musina Winter Games at Skoonplaas Stadium, Matshivha Holdings shopping complex and Messina Hospital, at the weekend. She believes her strategy worked as hundreds of people came to listen to her.

"Our mission was accomplished because with the cast (of Muvhango) many people came to listen to our message," Phiri said.

At the hospital she talked to patients and wished them a speedy recovery. A stampede almost ensued at Matshivha Holdings when young people mobbed the actors.

Phiri said the games, which involved 11 sporting codes, were aimed at unearthing talent that would make the small municipality proud.

"As a small municipality we also pride ourselves in having produced the legendary Lesley "Slow poison" Manyathela, who was a top goal scorer of the Premier Soccer League when he died."

Phiri said the municipality doing its best in service delivery.

She said the municipality had identified crime hot spots and would work with the police and army to root out crime.

She said the Muvhango actors wanted to show local youths that you can succeed irrespective of where you come from.
