UNEMPLOYMENT and a lack of relevant skills are among the socio-economic challenges facing young people

North West MEC for social development, women, children and people with disabilities Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi told a youth development seminar in Taung yesterday that increase in job losses, rise in poverty levels, low levels of skills and moral decay adversely affect young people.

"Inability to find employment creates a sense of uselessness and idleness among young people that can lead to increased crime, mental health problems, violence, conflicts and drug taking," she said.

She lamented the fact that most communities in the province have a hub of graduates without formal employment.

"It goes without saying that if we are going to be successful in our attempts to reach the fullest economic potential , we will have to consider making serious investmentS in training and skilling our young people," she said.
