Mangosuthu lectures start today

LECTURES at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban are expected to resume today after a two-week strike forced the institution to close

In a statement university spokesperson Bheki Hlophe said management had met with student representatives and a mutual agreement was reached.

Management had suspended academic activities after student protests interrupted the graduation period and an assessment week.

The university's registrar, Mike Naidoo, also confirmed that the normal academic activities would resume today.

He said the parties had agreed that outstanding issues would be discussed later. Hlophe appealed to students who live on campus to return.

The university's SRC president, Mxolisi Ndlovu, said they were pleased that an agreement had been reached with management.

Ndlovu said the strike had negatively affected the university's academic schedule and they planned to meet management today to ask for a rescheduling of programmes.

"Exams begin on May 23 and we will have to come up with a plan to make up for lost time."
