Spate of road accidents today

Paramedics have been tending to people in Johannesburg, Durban and Ladysmith today - A motorist lost control of his car, two taxis crashed, a truck struck protesters and an old lady was run over

A man who lost control of his car on the N1, in northern Johannesburg, on Monday was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in a critical condition, said Netcare 911.

Spokesman Jeff Wicks said the motorist lost control of his car between the William Nicol and Malibongwe Drive offramps on Monday morning.

He said the car hit the barriers and spun several times before coming to a standstill.

The driver sustained spinal and head injuries and fractured legs.

Traffic was disrupted for more than an hour.

  • Four protesters died and a fifth was seriously injured when they  were hit by a truck in Ladysmith on Monday, the department of transport said.    

“The five people were hit by a truck on the Helpmekaar Road at 6.30am,” spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said.

Four died at the scene and one person was taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital in a serious condition.

Mngomezulu did not know what the protest was about.    

  • Eighteen people were injured, five seriously, in a second taxi accident on the M25 in Durban on Monday, Netcare911 paramedics said.

The taxi overturned at 10.30am near the Duffs Road offramp, spokesman Chris Botha said.

The injured were stabilised at the scene before being transported to local hospitals.

This was the second taxi accident on the same stretch of road on  Monday morning.

In the first, another 18 people were injured when a taxi overturned on the M25 near the KwaMashu turn-off. One of the passengers is in a critical condition.

  • An elderly pedestrian died after being struck by a car on Umgeni  Road, Durban, on Monday morning, Netcare911 paramedics said.    

The woman, in her 70s, was trying to cross the road when a vehicle swerved to avoid her, but overturned as it struck her, spokesman Chris Botha said.

Medics declared her dead on the scene.

The driver was unharmed.    

The accident happened at 9.30am on the city-bound lane, leaving the road closed for three hours while the vehicle was removed.
