Switched-on great-great-granny

PRAYER and respecting all people are the secrets of Pauline Taukobong's long life. She turned 100 last week and is still healthy

"Respect for myself and other people is what has helped me live this long. I also pray a lot."

She was born in 1911 in Makapanstad outside Pretoria. She had seven children - three of whom have died. She has 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Taukobong, who uses a walking stick, said: "I walk to the clinic and I totally refuse to use a wheelchair. This is because I can still walk and my eyes are very sharp. My ears are very sharp."

She said she misses her husband Edward, who died 49 years ago. They got married when she was 20.

"My husband and I got married in 1931, the same year we moved to Soweto. He used to take me to the bioscope, now called the cinema. When I look at his pictures I miss him a lot. I am too old to go to the movies like I used to, so I have given myself the job of answering phone calls at my house," she said.

Her daughter Mila said: "She is a loving, caring, respectful and very helpful person."

Granddaughter Mabontsi says she is generous and adds: "She is quite a chatterbox, loves jokes and telling old stories. She loves her family and taking calls."
