ANC finalises election lists of candidates despite disputes

THE ANC has finalised its local government election candidate lists in North West and Eastern Cape

The provinces delayed with their lists after disputes concerning procedures in nominating candidates and in some instances litigation against the ANC.

The ANC instructed the Eastern Cape to start the nomination of candidates afresh in the OR Tambo region and in 35 branches in North West.

ANC NEC member Ngoako Ramatlhodi said: "The ANC is happy to announce that the two provinces yesterday (Thursday) met the NEC deadline of finalising their lists.

"The concern to the national leadership on the two provinces stemmed from objections lodged by our members and branches but also came as a result of non-adherence to national list guidelines."

He said the party would submit its final list to the Independent Electoral Commission despite current court cases challenging the ANC list conference in the Alfred Nzo and Buffalo regions of the Eastern Cape to disband.

"It is our view that the ANC can make submission of its candidates to the IEC, even in relation to these two regions, pending findings of the court of law," he said.

Ramatlhodi said it was disturbing that individuals used the courts to subvert the party's democracy and force the ANC to make them candidates.

ANC national spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the party would persuade members who had formed parallel structures in Eastern Cape to abide by the party rules.

He said the unfolding drama in the province was new to the ANC.

"We will deal with it and ultimately we will overcome even in the Eastern Cape," Mthembu said.

He said the ANC gave residents a right to nominate candidates of their choice and since 50 men and only 10 women were nominated, the party intervened through the proportional representation list.

"We can't say to the people at a ward level that they have not nominated correctly because they have nominated men," Mthembu said.

"You cannot change the will of the people at a ward level, but through the proportional representation we are then able to balance and come to the 50-50 balance."
