Caregivers unhappy

HOME-BASED caregivers in Waterberg, Limpopo, have threatened to abandon their patients over a wage dispute

The mothers have threatened to embark on a strike to to get the attention of the department. They accuse the provincial department of health and social development of neglecting them.

The caregivers are from more than 20 home-based committees around the Waterberg district municipality.

The mothers, whose duties involve taking care of patients with HIV-Aids, TB, asthma and related chronic diseases, claim they have been exposed to many diseases in the line of duty.

Spokesperson for the group, Kebadiretsi Mocheko of Ga-Seleka, said: "We could be infected by diseases such as TB or HIV-Aids while helping the sick, but we are not properly taken care of.

"We want the department to raise our salaries from R1100 to R3500 a month."

Department spokesperson Joe Maila urged the caregivers not to abandon their work but to rather approach them for talks.
