Robbers shoot man and wife

A LIMPOPO businessman has been shot dead and his wife wounded by three armed robbers.

The incident happened at Klipheuwel in Elandskraal near Marble Hall early on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the robbers allegedly entered the spaza shop owner's house and demanded money at gunpoint at about 1am.

The robbers found the 52-year-old businessman in bed with his wife.

Ramatseba said the man was shot in the chest and died instantly while his wife, 40, was shot in the stomach and right leg. The woman was admitted to hospital.

Ramatseba said the robbers fled on foot with cash, two cellphones and groceries.

"The couple's 14-year-old son, who witnessed the ordeal while hiding under a bed, has also been hospitalised to receive trauma counselling," he said.

Ramatseba said no arrests had been made yet and urged anyone with information about the robbery to come forward or contact Constable Monakedi Kgomogoroga of Elandskraal police on 078-258-7893.

Meanwhile, police are still searching for a suspected car hijacker who shot and wounded a police officer before fleeing on Saturday at Namakgale township in Hoedspruit.

Ramatseba said the shooting happened when a suspect refused to be searched and started firing at a police car.

The police officer had been hospitalised, he said.

The suspect was being sought in connection with the theft of motor vehicle parts and a radio.
