'Why I quit SACP post' - Lekganyane

FORMER Limpopo SACP secretary Soviet Lekganyane says his resignation and the subsequent disbandment of the provincial executive has nothing to do with SACP matters but everything with leadership contestations in the ANC.

Instead of driving the nationalisation programme, the SACP was concerning itself with ANC leadership matters and who should be the next secretary of the ANC between Gwede Mantashe and Fikile Mbalula, Lekganyane said yesterday.

"The SACP should not be leading those discussions. Those matters should be left to the ANC," he said.

Lekganyane accused the SACP national office of targeting Limpopo "because of its harmonious relationship with the ANC and the ANCYL, particularly its president Julius Malema".

"They disbanded the province because they want to prepare a platform to launch an onslaught on the ANC in the province and against Malema and we refused to be part of that programme."

Lekganyane, who is also MEC for local government and housing in the province, said he resigned from the SACP because he refused to illegally award tenders and government work to his own comrades.

"Matters came to a head when I blacklisted a construction company owned by a member of the PEC that failed to complete 500 RDP houses in the Vhembe region a few years ago," he said.

He resigned on Thursday as provincial secretary for the SACP following irreconcilable differences with the national SACP office.

SACP national spokesperson Malesela Maleka refused to comment on the disbandment and the resignation of Lekganyane.

"We wish not to comment on speculation about internal affairs of the SACP," Maleka said.

An SACP insider alleged the party was angered by the appointment of its politburo member, David Masondo, as Limpopo MEC for treasury without being consulted.

"Comrade Soviet sits in the provincial executive committee of the ANC in Limpopo and he must have played a role in the appointment of Masondo," the insider said.

"The deployment of Masondo in the Limpopo government is like a spit in the face of the party. His association with Premier Cassel Mathale, ANCYL president Julius Malema and Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula will weaken the SACP's plan to have influence in the ANC leading to 2012 and beyond."
