Smiles for young faces

FROM February 21 until tomorrow the Smile Foundation held its first smile week for 2011, with 19 children having received life-changing surgery to correct facial disfigurements at the Dr George Mukhari Hospital in GaRankuwa near Pretoria.

The Smile Foundation, We Love Africa and the Dr George Mukhari Hospital are working together to put smiles on the faces of these children.

"We are excited to support the Dr George Mukhari Hospital once again during a Smile Week. The Smile Foundation is always made to feel welcome. We are supported by the hospital administration and the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery," said Moira Gerszt, chief operations officer of the foundation.

We Love Africa, an international non-governmental organisation that provides funding for surgery for children across Africa, will sponsor operations on 25 children at the hospital this year.

"The first 19 children will be operated on during the Smile Week and the remaining six will undergo surgery the week after," Gerszt said.

The foundation will also launch a skills development programme in which surgeons and nursing staff will have the opportunity to acquire new skills in a specific field relating to the type of surgery procedures that are going to take place.

The foundation provides pre-operative psycho-social support. It will also provide transport for the children who will receive surgery and their caregivers.
