Official 'sold RDP houses to woman'

A CASE of corruption has been opened against a Limpopo ANC councillor for allegedly selling two RDP houses to an indigent woman between November and December last year.

Ward 14 councillor in the Lepelle-Nkumpi municipality in Lebowakgomo, Motlishi Kgwedi, is expected to turn himself in to the Lebowakgomo police by today or face arrest.

This after Kgwedi allegedly sold two RDP houses to a Lebowakgomo woman for R8500 though the woman qualified for a free house from the government. Refilwe Italia Mashego of Unit S in Lebowakgomo allegedly bought the two houses from Kgwedi but could not move into them because the same houses were sold to other people.

Mashego complained to the ANC in the Peter Mokaba region about how she had been swindled by the councillor.

Sowetan published an article a fortnight ago in which Mashego claimed she bought the two houses, one in Unit F and the other one in Unit Q, on November 20 and December 18 for R3000 and R5500, respectively.

Police spokesperson Captain Mamphaswa Seabi confirmed that a case of corruption had been opened against Kgwedi on February 16.

Executive mayor for the Capricorn district municipality and ANC regional chairperson Lawrence Mapoulo said yesterday: "Our preliminary investigations revealed that there was a sense of truth in the woman's claims.

"We therefore advised her to get a witnesses to support her claims and to further approach law enforcement agencies such as the police to open a case.

"Though the councillor remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law, opening a case against him proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that there is no place for corrupt individuals in the ANC."

Local government and housing MEC Soviet Lekganyane said his department had allocated more than 30 000 RDP houses to indigent households earning less than R3000 a month.

He said the houses may not be sold, transferred, demolished or rented out before the legitimate owners had lived in them for eight years.
