Threat of strikes in 3 Metros

Samwu is protesting against Westonaria acting mayor Agnes Khumalo's salary of R1,4 million

THE South African Municipal Workers Union has threatened to stage the "mother of all strikes" that would ground to a halt all municipal services in Gauteng.

The union has declared a dispute with three metropolitan councils and a local municipality.

Samwu held a media briefing in Johannesburg yesterday where it outlined plans to halt services in the Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg metropolitan councils.

In Tshwane, the dispute is over allegations of corruption in which the union is accusing certain senior officials of being involved in a scam in which they are selling the metro buses' spare parts to outside bus companies.

In the Westonaria local municipality, Samwu is protesting against acting mayor Agnes Khumalo's R1,4 million annual salary.

Samwu says Khumalo does not deserve that salary because the municipality is small and communities under its jurisdiction are living in abject poverty because of lack of service delivery.

Samwu provincial secretary Ntsikelelo Klaas said the indefinite strikes would start in Johannesburg on Monday, followed by Ekurhuleni on Tuesday and Tshwane on March 3.

He said the date for the protests in Westonaria was still to be decided on.

Klaas warned that the strike would involve all municipal entities.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said they had received a letter from the union and were still considering it.

Attempts to get comment from other municipalities were unsuccessful.
