Threat to shut school over high failure rate

PARENTS of pupils at the Mokope High School in Matshwi village in Bolobedu outside Modjadjiskloof are threatening to shut down the school if it produces poor results - again - at the end of the year.

They are angry because of a high failure rate last year, especially in Grades 10 and 11.

The parents said this was due to the teachers' failure to provide an effective learning and teaching environment to the pupils from the moment the school reopened for the first term last year.

They accused the principal and his staff of being lazy.

According to a parent, who asked to remain anonymous, they were tired of the situation because most of the pupils who failed had been in the same grade for three years.

She said parents feared the high failure rate might have been prompted by the lock-out of pupils by teachers in the morning for arriving late at school.

"We do not understand why our children fail in large numbers, while teachers are ignoring the situation," the parent said.

The parents said the teachers were given until June this year to improve the situation.

They also alleged that though the school had managed to produce a more than 60percent pass in last year's matric exams, more still needed to be done to improve internal classes before they go to matric.

Principal Isaac Modjadji said he was aware of the situation that had even created problems of overcrowding in the two classrooms.

But Modjadji said the total number of Grade 10 pupils who had failed last year was less than 300 and not 500 as claimed by parents.

Modjadji also said some of the Grade 10 pupils who continuously failed over the past two years had been promoted to the next grade.
