THE collapse of part of the Randburg magistrate's court roof last year has resulted in a backlog of more than 400 cases.

To recover lost time, cases will be heard at the weekend.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe visited the court yesterday to see "for ourselves the damage caused by the collapse on November 29".

"I am deeply concerned about the safety of workers," he said.

Maintenance officer Motsake Thotobolo said: "He (Radebe) did not get the true story of what is happening here. The people he spoke to are the same people who hid a report from us. We feel our lives are not valued."

The engineer's report released on January 12 said "other areas of the roof have similar defective construction as the main girder truss which collapsed. Therefore there is a risk of further collapses in future".
