Speed star Caster gets own wheels

WOMEN'S 800m champion Caster Semenya has landed a herself the role of brand ambassador for a car manufacturer.

She has been sponsored with a brand-new car for the next 12 months.

Great Wall Motors South Africa (GWM) handed the 19-year-old a GWM CB150 ME with her picture and name branded on its sides in Midrand yesterday. They officially announced that she would be their brand ambassador.

"I am happy. I appreciate it," said Semenya.

Though she does not have a driver's licence now, she hopes to get it early next year.

"While I'm working on getting my licence, someone will drive me around. I really appreciate this car because, though I didn't mind taking taxis, at least now I'll also have a bit more privacy," she said.

Semenya said she is gradually recovering from a back injury that resulted in her missing the recent Commonwealth Games in India.

One of her priorities, besides pursuing a degree in sports science at the University of Pretoria, is next year's World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea.

"Like any world champion, my number one goal is to defend my title and I will be working hard and hope that I will be in good shape for the World Championships in August," she said.

Her other priority is the Caster Semenya Sport Academy camp that will see about 50 young athletes train with her.

"It is mainly for youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds, who don't have proper training facilities. About 20 of them come from my home province, Limpopo. I think it's good for them to come and see what we do and how we do it because that will inspire these future world champions," she said.

Tony Pinfold, GWM SA chairman, said: "We are privileged to have Caster as our brand ambassador. Like her, our company has proven the naysayers wrong.

"South Africa should not only be proud of her but support her too."
