Shock news in murder of tourist

Honeymoon slaying may have been a hit

Gugulethu civic organisations say last week's hijacking and murder of a British honeymooner has tarnished the image of the community as a tourist-friendly destination.

But in shock new developments, evidence emerged yesterday that the slaying of Anni Dewani, who was hijacked with her new husband Shrien Dewani in Gugulethu, might have been a planned hit.

Three people have been arrested so far though only two armed men hijacked the Dewanis.

British tabloid The Sun reported last week that Shrien Dewani's business owed British banks a whopping R70 million.

Police have not yet come out to say who masterminded the alleged hit, but Dewani is flying back to Cape Town this week, apparently to identify suspects at an identity parade. But local papers reported yesterday that he was being escorted back by the British police.

Meanwhile, Gugulethu civic organisations held a press conference on Saturday at the popular eatery Mzoli's Place.

The Gugulethu Youth Development Council (GDYC) urged the youth to become "informers" to clean the area of crime.

GDYC chairperson Sonwabo Ngxumza said he was happy that the community of Khayelitsha - where Anni's body was found - had played a role in the arrest of the two suspects.

"This shows that the community of Khayelitsha was not sleeping. They are not prepared to harbour criminals or protect them," he said.

"We need to do the same. Let's be impimpi and refuse to allow criminals to run amok in our areas. It kills the image of Gugulethu and shreds our tourism to tatters.

"We need to protect tourism in Gugulethu. We cannot lose tourism as a result of criminals. We are going to get young people to fight crime."

Speaking on behalf of the Gugulethu Development Forum Andile Tyingwa said their organisation had been dealt a blow by the the killing of Anni.

"We are going to make sure that such a crime does not take place during our watch. We are busy engaging in a plan for the festive season to make sure that tourists who visit Gugulethu are safe.

"Those who have other intentions to rob or steal will be dealt with our might."

Mzonke Dlambulo of the community policing forum said though the people charged with Dewani's murder were not from Gugulethu, the township had been given a bad name.

"Tourists must come and we vow they will be protected," Dlambulo said.
