Net closes on rhino killers

EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife said yesterday that the decomposing carcass of another adult white rhino had been found in the Isimangaliso Wetland Park.

The rhino was found late on Wednesday near Khula Village between St Lucia village and Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, with both its horns removed.

A postmortem examination will be held to determine how it died.

Ezemvelo Wildlife staff are assisting with the investigation.

The grim discovery comes as six suspects in other poaching cases in the province appeared in court on Wednesday.

Three men - Jeremiah Zungu, Thokozani Mazibuko and Musawenkosi Mthimkhulu - all of Ulundi, appeared in the Babanango magistrate's court near Melmoth in northern KwaZulu-Natal on charges of killing and de-horning a rhino.

The men admitted to killing the rhino at the Ophathe Game Reserve outside Ulundi and selling its horn in Johannesburg.

The matter was postponed to next Wednesday for bailapplication.

Two other men appeared in the Ulundi magistrate's court last Monday after they were found in possession of illegal firearms.

Police were still investigating two other cases of rhino killing that occurred in the area.

So far 17 rhinos have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal since the beginning of the year. Nationally, more than 200 rhinos were killed over the same period.

KZN Wildlife chief executive officer Bandile Mkhize said: "Our information is that one of the suspects was trained by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, but then it was still KZN Parks Board and he is is no longer in the employ of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife."

He said the confiscated firearms did not belong to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Three other suspects arrested in the Ndumo and Manguzi areas on Sunday and Monday have appeared in the Ingwavumamagistrate's court.
