Now municipal workers to strike

The SA Municipal Workers' Union will embark on a strike in Gauteng on Friday, in solidarity with striking public servants

"The 52,000 members of Samwu in Gauteng will be going on the solidarity strike on Friday," said spokesman Tahir Sema.

"Samwu's membership in other provinces are in the process of discussing pledging solidarity."

Sema said there was no need for the union to give the employer seven days' notice, because there was no wage dispute between Samwu  and the employer.

Cosatu called for a solidarity  strike on Tuesday to try and get the government to accede to public  servants' demand for an 8.6% wage increase and R1000 a month  housing allowance. The government is offering a seven percent increase and a R700 allowance.
