'MJ' Motsogi fondly remembered

THOSE who have had the privilege of meeting or working with Michael John "MJ" Motsogi will attest to the fact that he was a jolly good fellow.

I had that privilege once way back in 1995 during the production of an SABC drama Bitso Lebe Ke Seromo.

His stare could sometimes send you scurrying for cover but once you got close to him his warmth was overwhelming.

It is true that inner beauty is what matters the most. This rang true when I met Motsogi. Even though it's more than a decade ago, I still remember his disarming smile.

The Sarafina 1 actor died on December 22 at Lesedi Clinic in Soweto after a short illness. He was 51. A father of four, Motsogi climbed the ladder to celebrity status after cutting his teeth in the township with Mantari on the East Rand.

After that he worked with Gibson Kente when he starred in Hungry Spoon. He then joined Mbongeni Ngema and toured the world with Sarafina I.

At the time of his death Motsogi was working for Ochre Media as an editor. Motsogi edited productions such as Scandal, Takalane Sesame, Relate, Zola 7 and DStv's Safron.

He starred in Lene Mphoxo in which he played the main character, Fikile aka Fix. The role propelled him to celebrity status in the township.

He also featured in the SABC2 drama Bitso Lebe Ke Seromo as a guerrilla who returns from exile. According to his fiancée, Nondumiso Mguda, he was suffering from TB.

She described Motsogi as caring, humble and loving. Motsogi is survived by his children Bonang, who is married in Lesotho, Lerato, 10, Asanda, 11, Katlego, 3, and fiancée Mguda. He was buried yesterday at Vlakfontein Cemetery.
