MP's son now Chief

THE community of Gija near Malamulele is bracing itself for a new ruler when, for the first time in the history of the Shangaan people, the heir replaces a reigning chief.

The event will take place at Magona village on December 10.

Community spokesperson Stanley Mkhacwa yesterday said the event was historic.

"The paperwork has been completed and the retiring chief's salary will be transferred to his son," Mkhacwa said.

He said there were instances of a son working on behalf of his father, "but this time it is going to be different".

Chief Nxumalo has said at various meetings: "I am old and have a son who is educated and understands today's world better."

The former school principal, who later became a homeland politician, joined the ANC before the 1994 elections.

He also took part in the Convention for a Democratic SA negotiations that ushered in the new political order.

He belongs to the Gija house, the junior to Mandlhakazi house, whose incumbent, Eric Mpisane, was unsuccessful at being installed as Shangaan king.

Had he succeeded Samuel Nxumalo would be the prime minister of the Gaza kingdom.

The new leader is brimming with confidence and community members are believed to be happy.
