Moses Mabhida's 'Big Three' rake in R10m

A YEAR after opening its doors, more than 200,000 people have visited the Moses Mabhida Stadium's Sky Car, Adventure Walk and tours.

eThekwini municipality's Julie-May Ellingson says the so-called "Big Three" have raked in almost R10 million in income so far.

The stadium is also PSL outfit, AmaZulu FC home-ground.

Ellingson says this excludes any income from events, suite sales and concessionaire sales.

The stadium was officially opened on November 29 last year and has hosted 18 soccer matches, including MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows. This excludes the World Cup; six other large-scale bowl events and more than 220 private functions.

She says they are happy with the number of people making use of the stadium and are expecting this to pick-up during the holiday season.

An influx of visitors annually comes to the city during the festive season and this year won't be different.

"We are expecting a large number of people to come from Gauteng ... and from the rest of KwaZulu-Natal," she says.

"And we're putting on special activity programmes for families coming to the stadium.

"So there'll be a whole lot of activities - jumping castles, hoola hoops, ice cream eating competitions and so on so to make it a family environment."

Some of the events to be hosted at the stadium include this Saturday's big national celebration of unity marking the arrival of Indentured Indian labourers in KwaZulu-Natal 150 years ago.
