Stabbed to death on street

A BOKSBURG magistrate is to rule today on whether a man charged with premeditated murder after stabbing his wife outside social workers' offices should get bail.

According to court papers Lesotho national Ntoampe Mokete allegedly stabbed his wife Winnie Mokete outside social workers' offices in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, in October.

A police officer, who had driven them there and is a state witness, said he was called by his senior to take the couple to social workers for counselling.

The wife's former employer also accompanied them.

There appeared to be a disagreement between the couple after Mokete had come looking for his wife in Boksburg to take her and their four-year-old child back to Lesotho.

The wife had worked as a nanny before she quit and went to look after her child who lived with her mother-in-law.

"She did not want to go back to Lesotho," said Elizabeth Ngozo, who knew her.

When they arrived at the Boksburg magistrate's court social worker staff there told them to to take the matter to social workers in Daveyton.

The police officer said the couple never argued in the car.

"We arrived at the Daveyton offices next to the mall. While we were walking to the offices, in the blink of an eye, the man turned around and stabbed his woman and ran away."

The officer ran after him and arrested him. When he returned the wife had bled to death before an ambulance could be called.

On the charge sheet Ntoampe said he was employed and earned R3500 and that he was looking after "a very large family".
