ET murder trial begins

ALL eyes are on the small town of Ventersdorp this morning when the trial of a man and a teenager accused of killing AWB leader Eugène Terre'blanche begins.

The two - Chris Mahlangu, 28, and the 15-year-old boy are facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

They allegedly hacked Terre'blanche to death on his farm on April 3 and later turned themselves in to the police.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said the two would be tried under different laws.

"The minor will be tried under the Child Justice Act and the Mahlangu under the Criminal Procedure Act," Mhaga said.

He said the trial would be held in camera and that the media would be expected to apply in order to be allowed in.

Mahlangu's lawyer, Puna Moroka, said he was ready for the trial.

At previous court appearances Mahlangu and the minor came to court under heavy police escort, which included a helicopter.

On July 14 Mahlangu was granted a R5000 bail, but in October the bail was revoked after it was discovered that he had given false information when he applied for bail.

During their last appearance racial tensions almost boiled over, with the police keeping black and white supporters apart.
