Murdered King Edward School pupil's mom fumes

THE mother of murdered King Edward VII High School pupil Mfundo Ntshangase yesterday demanded to know why her son's alleged killers were treating the court like a circus.

When defence attorney Moleko Ratau told the Randburg regional court that his client, Stephane Yavwa, had not arrived, Nonhlanhla Ntshangase became furious.

"Your worship, this is not fair. It's my child that died but we are busy nursing these people (accused) with kid gloves as if they did nothing wrong.

"I have been here since morning and I work. I am up to here," she said placing her hand under her chin.

Magistrate George Andrews warned Ntshangase that he would ask her to leave the court if she interrupted proceedings.

She then apologised.

"I'm sorry. The thing is ... I have feelings," she said.

Yavwa arrived at 12.20pm and told the court he did not know the case was on yesterday.

Andrews said he was not convinced by his reasons and sentenced him to a R300 fine or 60 days imprisonment. Yavwa paid the fine.

Ntshangase, 17, of Meadowlands, Soweto, died at Olivedale Hospital after he was stabbed twice in the chest and once in the back at a birthday party in Randburg after a social event on September 16 2007.

Yavwa told the court that one of the accused, Omphile Robert Masinga, told them the next day that he stabbed Mfundo.

"We met at Mitchell's Park in Berea and discussed what happened the previous night. Accused 5 (Masinga) told us that he stabbed Tshangi (Mfundo's nickname) with a knife. He described word for word how he stabbed the deceased.

"We were shocked but not sure if he was telling the truth until we saw the news that a KES pupil was killed," he said.

Masinga denied he killed Mfundo.

"I did not have a knife. I heard about the incident on the news," he said.

The trial continues.
