Roadlink ordered off Park Station

A JOHANNESBURG high court judge has ordered bus company SA Roadlink to vacate Park Station within the next 14 days.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the owners of the station, yesterday filed an urgent application against SA Shorthauls, the company that owns the buses, and its owner, Thagraj Reddy, over failure to pay rent.

SA Roadlink management and their legal representatives did not appear to reply to papers lodged by Prasa.

On a notice of motion papers submitted to court, Prasa argued that they are owed R562,431 by the bus company.

Both parties have a lease agreement where SA Roadlink had to pay R24,000 every month since 2007.

Yesterday, Judge Percy Blieden ordered that "Roadlink vacate the premises within 14 days, failing which, the sheriff of the high court would be authorised to evict them".

He also ordered that the company pay the amount owing and a further R24,863 a month, backdated to June 2010, until the day they vacate the premises.

They were also ordered to pay 12,5 percent interest on all the money owed.

SA Roadlink has made headlines for its carnage on the roads rather than being a luxury liner.

Early this month one of their drivers and a passenger died after their bus travelling to Durban collided with a truck.

Former KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC and now SA Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has labelled the operator's buses "coffins on wheels" after several crashes.

The liner had its operating licence from Johannesburg to Pretoria and Johannesburg to Upington suspended by the transport appeal tribunal while the Western Cape threatened to follow suit.

In one of its deadly accidents, the bus company left 11 people dead on its way to Durban. In another, seven people died and 50 were injured.

The company has had 11 of its buses taken off the road for being unroadworthy. One of its drivers was arrested for drunk driving.

In December 2009, one of their buses' steering wheel was faulty and it had only one window wiper. The driver's door did not close at all.
